i’m so disappointed

(I should first apologize for what is probably a badly developed post. I tend to have these thoughts in my mind a lot, but I rarely write them out.)

I’ve been using Hulu a lot recently, and I’ve come across a commercial that makes a claim that’s something like “fertility is a woman’s number one birthright”.

Seriously? Who in their right mind would say that?

First, the whole act of birth is an ugly thing. Yes, the ultimate product is wonderful and a miracle. However, why should we be celebrating our ability to go through 9 months of incredible discomfort only to culminate in hours of extreme pain?

Second, I take offense to the word “birthright”. Birthright makes me feel guilty that I don’t ever intend to have children. Am I abandoning some sacred gift that has been granted to me?

Finally, and probably most importantly, being born a woman by no means equals having the right to bear children. Having children is not about the woman; it’s about the child. It is about whether or not the child will be well cared for and loved and ultimately not too screwed up by his/her parents. Just because a woman has the capacity to bear a child does not mean she should.

And just to add on a little extra rage at the end… can’t someone find a way to make the men give birth instead? Isn’t it their turn yet?
